All over the country the interest in recycling certainly seems to be on the increase, here at NCC being a green minded bunch we are always keen to encourage and promote any moves towards a more sensible way of doing things that will hopefully benefit the planet and it’s residents. Whilst no borough is an island – well there might be some actually – we ask what is Newham up to on the recycling front – this week and off into the future.
Of course the NCC studios are themselves a shining homage to recycling - or more appropriately re-use – with more than a little help from our Wombling friends from Newham Community Recycling – we launched on March 2nd this year with a complete absence of expenditure on new items – which was of course useful as we don’t have any money.
With National campaigns, global awareness and a variety of other media friendly stories NCC will be doing it’s bit by highlighting some of what will be going on in Newham by broadcasting and creating a podcast each day this week. This is just as well as we discovered that the august publication “The Newham Magazine” had already promised as much in its’ current edition
So what’s going on this week - listen to the broadcast and find out innit!

Our friends from Newham Community Recycling the subject of a short video -which goes some way in giving the world outside Newham - as well as those still not up to speed in the borough - a view of what exactly it is they do.
Emerging media star Michelle of the Wombles Team gives an insight into the recycling process and how to possibly find love along the way.
Whilst they can’t guarantee they will help you find love - the Wombles certainly give Recycling lots of local love - in the form of collections and targeted re-use of unwanted domestic items. To get the full picture watch the video.

It was back in 1992 that Del boy announced ‘Peckham Spring water, from a natural and ancient source.’
Quietly followed with: ‘Well it’s from the Thames, you can’t get more ancient and natural than that!’
Well it appears on a more serious note that fact seems to have, in no small measure, caught up with fiction once again. Most of us take for granted that when we turn on the tap, we will get clean drinking water whenever we want it, with little thought of where it comes from. But only last year we were facing water shortages in London because of a drought.
In response to this Thames Water are building Britain’s first ever large scale desalination plant in Beckton. When operational it will transform the murky water from the River Thames in Beckton into drinking water. But the decision to go ahead and build the facility has proved controversial - with legal challenges and opposition from environmental campaigners.
Sound Radio reporter Pete Day met up with Don Sharples from Thames Water and Jon Aldenton from the Environment Trust to find out about “Source Beckton” drinking water.

Get the low down on a creative highlight

Hooray! It’s now June, which means festival season is upon us. And what better way to kick it off than with one of Europe’s leading arts festivals – Lift!
This year Lift presents an interactive concoction of international and national performances and experiences being held across the summer at Stratford and The South Bank.
There’s also something rather special that’s taking place. At the heart of this year’s Lift festival, we’ll see the launch of The Lift, which is a spectacular mobile arts venue that will host performances and hold discussions working with local communities.
Of course as the slowly burgeoning epicentre of all things community – no prizes for guessing where some of the Lift crew have been preparing a distinctly recycled aspect of the festival – “Trashcatchers” – well yes of course the Number One Centre in East Ham.
Sound Radio reporter Emma Marvin went long to the headquarters of Lift and spoke to Nicky Petto, who is one of the festival’s producers and Erica Campayne, a participation producer. Emma first asked Nicky to tell us more about what Lift is.

The disposal of rubbish is becoming an ever increasing problem in our society today. As a nation, we create 434 million tonnes of it every year, and we only manage to recycle around 17% of it!
With limited availability of landfill space and an ever expanding population, recycling
our waste is more crucial now than it has ever been. So with this in mind intrepid Sound Radio reporter Emma Marvin determined to find examples of innovative, committed and passionate recycling projects in the Newham area.
She did not need to travel too far to capture two of Newham’s leading recycling experts at the burgeoning Number One Centre in East Ham, where their respective projects are making a significant contribution towards reduction of Newham’s landfill waste.
In part one Emma speaks to Clare Matheson, who is the managing director of UK Food Recycling. In part two she speaks to Cliff Shafer, manager of Newham Community Recycling and discovers much including his favourite Womble.
