The disposal of rubbish is becoming an ever increasing problem in our society today. As a nation, we create 434 million tonnes of it every year, and we only manage to recycle around 17% of it!

With limited availability of landfill space and an ever expanding population, recycling

our waste is more crucial now than it has ever been. So with this in mind intrepid Sound Radio reporter Emma Marvin determined to find examples of innovative, committed and passionate recycling projects in the Newham area.

She did not need to travel too far to capture two of Newham’s leading recycling experts at the burgeoning Number One Centre in East Ham, where their respective projects are making a significant contribution towards reduction of Newham’s landfill waste.

In part one Emma speaks to Clare Matheson, who is the managing director of UK Food Recycling. In part two she speaks to Cliff Shafer, manager of Newham Community Recycling and discovers much including his favourite Womble.
