Recycle Week Day2

Unfortunately contrary to yesterdays report members of the boroughs recycling team will not be in the NCC studio today but will hopefully be joining us on Thursday afternoon instead.

There presence on Thursday will hopefully give us an opportunity to find out how the week has been going and what effect they feel this will have had on improving recycling performance in the borough.

Of course Newham starts from a decidedly humble position in terms of National league performance but with the reported concern of both Newhams’ elected Mayor, Sir Robin Wales and recently appointed Chief Executive, Joe Duckworth there will be pressure to see recent improvements in performance continue - I’m sure the borough team will give us a clear indication of the scale of the task at hand and how they intend to go about putting Newham positively on the national recycling map.

Of course one of the advantages of being part of the burgeoning community development that is the Didsbury Centre in East Ham is that you invariably have someone on the spot to give a bit of feedback with regard to events in the borough.

In this instance, Cliff Schafer of the Wombles, responsible for the running of the Didsbury Centre and a leading light in the third sector recycling movement in the borough was on hand at the first event at Newham Dockside, Beckton. While the week long initiative by the borough attempts to highlight the issue of recycling it will be passionate and ongoing commitment that ultimately engages residents to change their way of doing things – to this end Cliff has promised to return to the Beckton location with the Wombles to build on Mondays event at a date to be confirmed next month.

All over the country the interest in recycling certainly seems to be on the increase, here at NCC being a green minded bunch we are always keen to encourage and promote any moves towards a more sensible way of doing things that will hopefully benefit the planet and it’s residents. Whilst no borough is an island – well there might be some actually – we ask what is Newham up to on the recycling front – this week and off into the future.

Of course the NCC studios are themselves a shining homage to recycling - or more appropriately re-use – with more than a little help from our Wombling friends from Newham Community Recycling – we launched on March 2^nd this year with a complete absence of expenditure on new items – which was of course useful as we don’t have any money.

With National campaigns, global awareness and a variety of other media friendly stories NCC will be doing it’s bit by highlighting some of what will be going on in Newham by broadcasting and creating a podcast each day this week. This is just as well as we discovered that the august publication “The Newham Magazine” had already promised as much in its’ current edition

JOINing HANDS East Ham style

Lol Gellor of NCC joins hands with JOIN HANDS Youth Association and finds out what there up to, especially their upcoming event on June 20^th 6pm -11.30pm at the Didsbury Centre in East Ham.

Join Hands meets every Friday evening for the benefit of local young interested in music, dance and homework – yes homework.

Lol interviews three members of the team, including one of the youth members, to find out all about this fine example of a charitable initiative in the local community. What’s the link with the Gambia – listen here and find out. Better still get on down to the Didsbury Centre Saturday 20^th June 2009 for a fundraising event for this laudable project – music,dance, drama and some African and English food.

A Wombling we will go

Our friends from Newham Community Recycling the subject of a short video -which goes some way in giving the world outside Newham - as well as those still not up to speed in the borough - a view of what exactly it is they do.

Emerging media star Michelle of the Wombles Team gives an insight into the recycling process and how to possibly find love along the way.

Tea Time Treat for Mary part2

Mary Wust - NCC’s American Intern hosted her first live music guest, Newham resident - Daryl Holley of Branded No.1 fame, who it has to be said may have been a little, as they say euphemistically in the media, tired and emotional - though he was actually quite lively and jolly - if not always entirely coherent.

So a good test for Mary who passes with flying colours, and a warning to all young ladies who come into contact with musicians with a taste for the devils brew.

That said Daryl gives quite a nice performance of a song in part one and part two - prior to his new album launch on April 15th

at the Betsy Trotwood.

Golden Tessa champions Newham 10k run

Olympic gold medallist Tessa Sanderson gives NCC’s Lol Gellor the rundown for the upcoming 10k run in Newham.

NCC Launch Guests - AK & B Dot

Amongst the first guests on NCC launch day were Alyas and B Dot. Interviewed by Lol Gellor they talked a little of their involvement with I LIke It Productions a member of the Number 1 Centre family.

Lol even managed to twist their arms and got them to give a little acapella taste of what will be coming soon.

Two young men on a positive tip as they say - proving as we know at NCC that with a little support and encouragment there is a wealth of talent ready to take to the netwaves depicting a very different picture to the media stereotype so often portrayed elsewhere.

Amy & Susan join Human Rights bash at Commonwealth Secretariat

Gorgeous Sound Radio reporters Amy and Susan were back with our friends at the Commonwealth Secretariat at the stunning Marlborough House in London, allegedly on the pretext of endorsing celebrations for “60 years of Human Rights”. It is also fair to say their enthusiasm for the mission was clearly enhanced at the promise of close proximity to fit men and women in grass skirts. Yes those wonderful Polynesian dancers our friends from a previous Sound Radio visit, were amongst a diverse and wonderful array of talent from all corners of the globe.

In amongst the interviews with artistes and commonwealth representatives catch Amy and Susan – almost speechless (almost!) as some young ladies clearly impress our dynamic duo with their grasp and respect for the progress of Human Rights over the last sixty years.

At Sound Radio we’ve said it before - it’s not all guns and knives when it comes to young people in London- well done Amy and Susan for capturing a really rather touching moment - and well done for behaving yourselves with the Polynesian dancers (no complaints at time of going to press).

Olympic dream or nightmare for East London?

As work gets underway at the Olympic Park for the 2012 Olympics, more and more East Enders are asking what are they going to get out of it. For people living in and around the area it’s not just about a couple of weeks of sporting events in the Summer of 2012, it’s about a lasting legacy.

But can the promise of “thriving, sustainable communities” become a reality? Sound Radio reporter Pete Day went down to Stratford to investigate. Meeting up with local people as well as Josh Ryan-Collins from the New Economics Foundation and Tom Travers from the London Development Agency.

“Adam and Sam play chicken in East Ham High St.”

No not hoodie knife wielding thug stuff but a much more subtle health threat- it’s the chicken awards!

Apart from helping the overall climb in obesity in our country, Chicken shops have one other vital purpose. “To provide quality food cheaply” I hear you say. No. It is to provide somewhere else for youths to go after being kicked off the street corner.

Of course, many other stereotypes within society visit Chicken shops, such as ‘the rushed businessman’, ‘the over-worked single mother’ and ‘the poor homeless person’. All of these people are after food that is cheap, convenient and tasty, and that is what they will get, in most cases.

Naturally, some shops are cheaper, faster, and tastier than others. Sound Radio’s temporary reporters, Sam and Adam, set out for the High Street of East Ham, to decide which Chicken shop was best for today’s discerning fast food eaters.

“Busta Rhyme in a kind of X factor Newham style”

No it’s not a Chuck D named artist in a singular manifestation it is a singing competition for 11-19 year olds in Newham .

Whilst most young seem to be perpetually characterised as feral, knife wielding, hooded, ganged up thugs – the latest addition to the post code inclusive Sound Radio love posse – Amy Redmond and Susan Okereke (rolling as hardcore street persona “Amy and Susan”)- report from Heat One of this positive youth competition.

Both feared and respected on the streets ahem! these broadcast broads “Mucho Respect –Amy and Susan” (T shirts coming soon) will also be acting as judges at the final – The Mayors Town Show on 12 July 3pm at the Music and Dance Stage.

So fix up and look sharp you at the back! – get on down to the final - who knows you may be witness to the future of music as we know it- at least in Newham!
